WE SUPPORT THE TRUCK PARKING SAFETY IMPROVEMENT ACT

    WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

    • There is currently only 1 parking spot for every 11 trucks on the road, resulting in drivers wasting an average of one hour every day trying to secure parking.
    • When truck drivers don’t have a designated place to park, they are put in a no-win situation. They must either continue to drive while they may be fatigued or out of legal driving time, or park in an undesignated and unsafe location like the side of the road or abandoned lot.
    • It forces truck drivers to make a choice between safety and following federal Hours-of-Service rules.
    • Federal law only allows a truck driver to be on the road for a limited amount of time, so a significant portion of a driver’s time on the road is completely wasted due to lack of parking.
    • This leads to inefficiency in the supply chain resulting in the slower delivery of goods to businesses and consumers.

    WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?

    • The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act (H.R. 2367/S. 1034) would dedicate hundreds of millions of dollars for truck parking projects across the country through a competitive discretionary grant program.
    • With a focus on increasing capacity, the legislation would provide funding for the construction of new rest areas and truck parking facilities, while also helping public entities convert existing spaces – such as inspection sites, weigh stations and closed rest areas – into truck parking locations.
    • States can already use federal funding for truck parking, but these projects lose out to more politically popular priorities like new highway lanes and road improvements. This legislation will finally get states to focus on the issue.
