WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
The current highway bill is set to expire at the end of September. As a result, Congress has been busy drafting legislation to renew surface transportation policy.
In May, the U.S. House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee advanced The BUILD America 250 Act, a carefully negotiated bipartisan highway bill. This is the first step in a long process that involves other committees, the Senate, as well as the White House. The bill is full of OOIDA priorities – policies that will improve the safety and operations of all our members.

- $750 million for truck parking
- Restroom access for truckers when they pick up and deliver freight
- A prohibition on predatory lease-to-own schemes
- Measures to combat freight fraud
- Higher barriers of entry for brokers and motor carriers to week out bad actors
- A more fair, transparent, and accountable DataQ process
- Improvements to the National Consumer Complaint Database
- Better ELD certification
- Incentives for training schools that require behind-the-wheel experience

Sounds like a lot of good stuff, right? It is! But like every highway bill, there are some provisions that give us heartburn, including a laxed approach to autonomous vehicle deployment, increases to truck weight limits, and the return of Beyond Compliance.
WHAT’S OOIDA DOING?
Over the past few years, OOIDA has been working closely with elected officials to ensure the best possible outcome for truckers in this reauthorization legislation. We’ve had countless meetings with lawmakers and their staff to explain our priorities. OOIDA VP Lewie Pugh has testified before Congress at multiple reauthorization hearings. We’ve mobilized our members to build support for several important proposals we have championed.
